Bumble Bee Toads, also known as Firebelly Toads, are a small species of toad native to parts of Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. These toads get their name from their distinctive coloration, which includes a bright yellow or orange underbelly and black or dark brown markings on their back. Bumble Bee Toads are a popular pet species due to their unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements. They are generally a hardy species and can make good pets for beginner herpetologists.
Origin: Bumble Bee Toads are native to parts of Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. They are often found in forested areas near streams or ponds and can also be found in rice paddies.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Bumble Bee Toads is between 70 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to provide a temperature gradient within the enclosure so that the toads can regulate their body temperature as needed.
Housing: Bumble Bee Toads are a small species and can be housed in a relatively small enclosure. A 10-gallon aquarium can be suitable for a small group of toads. The enclosure should have a secure lid to prevent escape and to maintain proper humidity levels. Substrate options include coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, or a soil-based substrate. Live plants can also be added to provide cover and climbing opportunities.
Feeding: Bumble Bee Toads are primarily insectivores and will eat a variety of small insects, such as crickets, mealworms, and fruit flies. It is important to provide a varied diet to ensure proper nutrition.
Lifespan: With proper care, Bumble Bee Toads can live up to 10 years in captivity. They are a relatively long-lived species compared to other amphibians.
Behavior and Personality: Bumble Bee Toads are generally a shy and reclusive species. They are mostly active at night and will spend much of the day hiding under cover. They are not typically handled as they can be delicate and prone to injury.
