The Blue Velvet Tarantula, also known as the Cobalt Blue Tarantula, is a stunningly beautiful and highly sought-after species among tarantula enthusiasts. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this species is known for its vibrant blue coloration and relatively aggressive behavior. In captivity, the Blue Velvet Tarantula requires specific conditions to thrive. These tarantulas prefer a temperature range of 22-28°C, with a humidity level of 75-80%. They require a secure enclosure with plenty of hiding places, such as cork bark or artificial plants, and a substrate that retains moisture well, such as coconut coir or peat moss.
Origin: The Blue Velvet Tarantula, or Haplopelma lividum, is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Vietnam.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for the Blue Velvet Tarantula is between 22-28°C, with a humidity level of 75-80%.
Housing: For proper housing, the Blue Velvet Tarantula requires an enclosure that is at least three times the diagonal leg span of the spider. The enclosure should be secure with a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape, and it should be equipped with hiding places, a water dish, and a substrate that retains moisture well. A temperature gradient should also be provided within the enclosure to allow the spider to regulate its body temperature.
Feeding: Blue Velvet Tarantulas are carnivorous and feed primarily on insects such as crickets, mealworms, and roaches. It is recommended to feed them one to two appropriately sized prey items once or twice a week.
Lifespan: The lifespan of the Blue Velvet Tarantula in captivity is around 10-15 years with proper care.
Behavior and Personality: This species is known for its aggressive behavior and should be handled with caution. They are fast-moving and defensive, and they will readily bite if threatened or provoked. However, with proper care, they can make fascinating and beautiful pets for experienced tarantula keepers.
