The Alpine Newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) is a small amphibian found in the mountainous regions of Europe. These newts are typically black or dark brown with bright orange undersides, and grow to be around 10-12 cm in length. They are semi-aquatic, spending most of their time in the water, but also require land to lay their eggs and hibernate during the winter months. Alpine Newts are popular pets due to their striking appearance and ease of care.

Please note: These are sold as breeding pairs.

Origin: The Alpine Newt is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, including the Alps and the Carpathians. They can be found in countries such as Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia.

Temperature: Alpine Newts prefer cooler temperatures and should be kept in a terrarium with a temperature range of 10-20°C.

Housing: When it comes to housing Alpine Newts, a tank of at least 40 liters is recommended. They require both land and water areas, with a 50/50 split being ideal. The water should be kept clean and well-aerated, with a filtration system in place to maintain good water quality. Providing hiding places and plants will help the newts feel more secure in their environment.

Feeding: Alpine Newts are carnivorous and should be fed a diet of live or frozen insects such as crickets, mealworms, and waxworms. They may also eat small fish, tadpoles, and earthworms. It's important to offer a variety of food to ensure they receive proper nutrition.

Lifespan: With proper care, Alpine Newts can live for up to 10 years in captivity. They may live longer in the wild, but are threatened by habitat loss and pollution.

Behavior and Personality: Alpine Newts are generally easy to care for and can become quite tame with regular handling. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. During the winter months, they will hibernate and require a cooler environment to encourage this behavior.

Please note: We don't ship live animals. You can order online and choose click and collect, and we will hold it for you.
