Unlike a plakat, its flowing finnage needs particular protection from current and rough surfaces.

Behaviour

Keep one male as the sole fish. His tail can make sustained swimming tiring; provide places to rest near the surface.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 40 litres, around a 45 × 30 cm footprint, for one male. A heated, filtered aquarium with a lid is essential. Extra Large is a supplier grade, not a separate species.

Compatibility

Exclude other male bettas, fin-nipping barbs and fish that chase or resemble rivals. A female is not a permanent companion. Shrimp may be eaten.

Diet

Feed quality betta pellets in modest portions, with frozen Artemia or Daphnia for variety. Present food where he can reach it without fighting the filter current.

Care

Maintain 25–27°C, pH 6.0–8.0 and 1–15 dGH. Fit a gentle sponge filter or baffle the outlet. Use broad leaves or a smooth resting ledge close to the surface and avoid jagged ornaments. Inspect fins for splits or deteriorating edges. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero; change 25–30% weekly.
