The Columbian Shark Catfish, scientifically known as Ariopsis seemanni, is a captivating species in the aquarium trade, renowned for its unique appearance and adaptability. This catfish typically grows to about 25-30 cm (10-12 inches) in length. It has a silver-gray body with a distinctive black tip on its dorsal fin, creating a striking contrast. One of the most interesting aspects of the Columbian Shark Catfish is its ability to adapt to various salinity levels, making it a popular choice for both freshwater and brackish water aquariums. They have a stout body, large eyes, and barbels around the mouth, which are typical characteristics of catfish.

Origin: This species is native to the coastal regions of Central and South America, where it inhabits estuaries and river mouths. These environments have fluctuating salinity, which the Columbian Shark Catfish is well adapted to.

Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Columbian Shark Catfish is between 22°C and 26°C (72°F to 79°F).

Water Quality: In freshwater, they require a pH range of 7.0 to 8.0. However, as they mature, they prefer brackish conditions with a specific gravity of 1.005 to 1.010. Regular monitoring and adjustment of water parameters are essential for their well-being.

Aquarium Size: A minimum of 200 liters is required for young Columbian Shark Catfish. Given their potential size and swimming needs, a larger tank is necessary as they grow. The aquarium should have a tight-fitting lid as they are skilled jumpers.

Feeding: Their diet is omnivorous. They accept a variety of foods, including high-quality pellet and flake foods, frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and vegetable matter.

Lifespan: Columbian Shark Catfish can live for about 10-15 years in well-maintained aquarium conditions.

Behavior and Personality: They are generally peaceful but can be predatory towards smaller tank mates. They are active swimmers and do best in a group of their own kind or with other large, peaceful fish.
