Gooseberry 'Invicta' is a popular and robust variety known for its heavy yields of large, pale green fruits that are both sweet and tangy, making them perfect for both fresh consumption and culinary uses such as in pies, jams, and desserts. The 'Invicta' variety is particularly appreciated for its resistance to common gooseberry pests and diseases, including mildew, which often affects other gooseberry cultivars. This hardy, deciduous shrub is an excellent choice for those looking to add a productive and low-maintenance fruiting plant to their garden. It's suitable for a range of garden settings, including fruit gardens, borders, and as part of an edible landscape.

Why we like it

  • Heavy yields of large, flavorful fruits ideal for various culinary uses.
  • Resistant to common gooseberry pests and diseases, including mildew.
  • Hardy and low-maintenance, suitable for a wide range of garden settings.

What to know

  • Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny to partially shaded position.
  • Prune in winter to maintain an open, goblet shape, which allows air circulation and reduces disease risk.
  • Water regularly, especially during dry periods and when the fruit is setting and swelling.
  • Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant in early spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Netting may be necessary to protect the fruit from birds as it ripens.

arrived perfectly

The Gooseberry arrived quickly, and with a strong root system. The form of the shrub resembled a sling shot. Which was perfect as I wanted to train it against the wall. As I went to transplant the shrub, I snapped one of the branches. I nearly cried in despair, but I've taped it up and hope it will heal. But the rest of the shrub is getting along absolutely lovely, as are all the other items I've purchased from Newlands.

Thank you
