The Apple 'Elstar' is a popular variety known for its exceptional taste and versatile use. Originating from the Netherlands in the 1950s, it's a cross between 'Golden Delicious' and 'Ingrid Marie', resulting in apples that are sweet with a slightly tart undertone. The fruit is medium-sized with a striking red flush over a yellow-green background. 'Elstar' apples are juicy and firm, making them excellent for eating fresh as well as for cooking and baking. This variety is appreciated for its early to mid-season harvest and its ability to store well, extending its availability.

Why we like it

  • Sweet with a delicious tart undertone, providing a balanced flavor.
  • Firm and juicy texture ideal for both fresh consumption and culinary use.
  • Good storage capability, maintaining quality over time.

What to know

  • Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers a sunny location.
  • Regular watering is crucial, especially during dry periods, to support its growth and fruit development.
  • Mulching helps retain soil moisture and control weeds around the tree base.
  • Requires pruning during the dormant season to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
  • Being not self-fertile, it needs a pollinator partner such as 'Golden Delicious', 'Gala', or 'Cox's Orange Pippin' to produce fruit.

Self pollinator or cross pollinator The Apple 'Elstar' is not self-fertile, requiring cross-pollination from another apple variety to bear fruit effectively. Suitable pollinators include varieties like 'Golden Delicious', 'Gala', and 'Cox's Orange Pippin', which can help ensure a successful harvest.
